Feast of St. Clare Celebrated August 11
Born Chiara Offreduccio in 1194, in Assisi, Italy, St. Clare became one of the few women leaders in the early Christian church. As a very young girl, she became devoted to the works of Saint Francis of Assisi, who mentored her, and made a promise to herself that she would serve God throughout her life in the tradition of Saint Francis, whose followers sought poverty and shunned the comforts of wealth and opulence. Honored in the Roman Catholic, Anglican and Lutheran Churches, the feast of Saint Clare is celebrated on August 11 each year.

As the founder of The Order of Poor Ladies and the author of their Rule of Life, she became one of the first females to write such a document. Her order of nuns, known now as Poor Clares, lived simply without money or luxuries, working and praying, and included her sister, Saint Agnes. Embracing the teachings of Saint Francis of Assisi, the sisters wore plain brown robes tied with rope at the waist and walked barefoot. Soon, frightened by an unseen force, the army fled and the sisters were saved.
