On February 11, in 1858, a fourteen-year-old girl named Bernadette Soubirious experienced an extraordinary apparition of The Blessed Mother of Jesus in a French grotto. That, and subsequent meetings during that year, have filled Catholics with awe for decades, seeking spiritual solace and healing in the waters of that very grotto. Millions, perhaps billions, of spiritual pilgrims have visited the grotto, partaking of the waters that run there and praying to Our Lady of Lourdes, as the lady in Bernadette’s vision is known. Many have experienced miracles and Lourdes has become synonymous with healing.

Our Lady of Lourdes told Bernadette, who grew to become a dedicated nun and was eventually venerated by the Church as Saint Bernadette, that she was the Immaculate Conception, and that she wished a shrine to be built at the site of the grotto. Today, the sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes is the site of millions of annual pilgrimages by the faithful from across the world. Water from the Lourdes stream is considered miraculous as worshippers drink it and wash in it, directed to do so by Our Lady when she appeared to Bernadette. Since her appearances, Our Lady of Lourdes has been the subject of many great works of art, dressed in white and standing in the grotto before the kneeling Bernadette.
