Saint Agnes Honored In Stained Glass

Saint Agnes, venerated as a virgin martyr among Roman Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, Anglican Communion and Lutheran worshippers, was born in 291 A.D. in Rome and lived to be only 13 years old before she was put to death for her faith in Christ.

Early in childhood, Saint Agnes made a promise to God that she would remain a virgin for her entire life, and devoted herself to the Lord. As a beautiful young woman, Agnes was pursued by many young men, but she rebuffed her suitors, telling them that she was the bride of only Jesus.  Procop, the son of the governor and a powerful young nobleman, even offered her beautiful gifts if she would agree to be his wife. Agnes refused.

Procop became enraged and accused Agnes of being a Christian before his father, an accusation that led to demands that she renounce her beliefs, then offers of wonderful rewards if she did. She continued to hold fast and was sent to a brothel, but was saved by an angel of God. Even pagans were sympathetic to her cause and showed great sadness when this beautiful young girl was led to her death, smiling in ecstasy as she was martyred for her Christian faith.

Her feast day is celebrated on January 21 each year.
