St. Vincent de Paul
St. Vincent de Paul comes in the top 30 most popular saints in America, with 141 Catholic churches named after him. Born in France in 1581, he distinguished himself throughout his life by his compassion, humility, and generosity. No wonder he is known as the “Great Apostle of Charity” and is the patron saint of charitable societies. His life was not without hardship and suffering, as at the age of 24, during a sea voyage he was taken captive by African pirates who enslaved him for about two years in Tunis. He managed to escape and returned to France where he continued his good work among the poor and needy. He died peacefully in Paris at the age of 80. His feast day is September 27th.
