St. Timothy

St. Timothy is revered as a first century Christian, Bishop, martyr and saint. In the New Testament he is described as a disciple of St. Paul, accompanying him on his missionary journeys. Timothy grew up in Lystra and was grounded in the scriptures by his Jewish mother, Eunice, and grandmother, Lois, who subsequently became Christians and were noted for their piety and devotion. His father was Greek, and the name Timothy is of Greek origin meaning “honored by God”. Timothy was a faithful and respected companion to Paul and he was assigned important tasks of ministry. After Paul was imprisoned in Rome, tradition states that Timothy returned to Ephesus where he was appointed as Bishop. Later he was stoned when he opposed a pagan festival. The feast day of St. Timothy is January 26th and he is invoked against stomach ailments. There are at least thirty Catholic churches in the USA named St. Timothy’s which places him in the top one hundred most popular saints. Stained glass art of St. Timothy usually shows him dressed as a bishop, sometimes together with St. Paul, or as a child with his grandmother.
