St. Stephen
St. Stephen is traditionally regarded as the first martyr of Christianity. According to the book of the Acts of the Apostles, he was chosen as a deacon in the early church. His devout life and teachings caused the Jewish authorities to hate him and accuse him of blasphemy. He was undeterred and radiant as he spoke God’s truth to his accusers shortly before they stoned him to death. Stained glass artworks of St. Stephen are numerous, some showing the scene of his death by stoning, and others depicting him with three stones and a martyrs palm frond. St. Stephen is the thirty-first most popular saint in the USA, with over 120 Catholic churches being named after him. His feast day is celebrated on December 26th and he is the patron saint of stone masons and casket makers.
