St. Rose Philippine Duchesne
Rose Philippine Duchesne was born in Grenoble, France in 1769. She was the second of seven daughters and one son, and they grew up in a castle together with their twelve cousins. As a child, Rose survived a smallpox outbreak and was educated at a monastery near Grenoble. She became a religious sister and a member of the Society of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. At the age of forty-nine, Rose was sent as a missionary to the United States to start the first communities of the Sacred Heart in Midwestern America. She persevered under adverse conditions, opening a boarding school for the daughters of pioneers. Later she began a school for Native Americans and was known as the “woman who is always praying”. St. Rose died in 1852 at the age of eighty-three. She was beatified in 1940 and canonized in 1988 by Pope John Paul II. She is the patron saint of the Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau, and her feast day is November 18th. In stained glass art St. Rose is usually seen wearing the nun’s black and white habit, seated in prayer with her folded hands resting on a map of America.
