St. Rose of Lima
St. Rose of Lima is depicted in stained glass and other sacred art as wearing a crown of roses. She was born in Lima, Peru in 1586, and although her real name was in fact Isabel, because of her great beauty she became known as “Rose”. As she grew older, Rose herself did not wish to be admired because she had given her heart to Jesus. So great was her fear that her beauty might be a snare and temptation to others that she once rubbed pepper on her face making it red and blistered. She was humble and obedient to her parents in everything except their desire for her to be married. She remained a virgin and it is said that her great love for Jesus caused her face to shine and her eyes to sparkle. Many miracles followed her death and she was later beatified and canonized. She is the patron saint of Latin America and the Philippines, and her feast day is August 23rd. St. Rose is the 26th most popular name for Catholic Churches in the USA with over 150 churches bearing her name. If you are planning to beautify your church building perhaps you might consider including a stained glass panel window of St. Rose. Please contact us and we would be happy to help you with this.
