St. Richard

St. Richard the Pilgrim or St. Richard of Wessex was an Englishman born in Wessex. He was the father of Willibald, Winnebald and Walburga who also became saints. He took his two sons and set off on a pilgrimage from England to Rome, via France. When they reached Lucca in Italy, Richard suddenly became ill and died. At his tomb miracles were reported to have occurred and he was greatly revered by the citizens of Lucca. The feast day of St. Richard is February 7th. In sacred artworks, including stained glass windows, he is pictured as a royal pilgrim wearing an ermine-lined cloak with his two sons. There are almost twenty Catholic churches in the USA named after St. Richard.
