St. Pius X
The birth name of Pope St. Pius X was Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto. He was born in Italy in 1835. His most outstanding achievement was to publish the Code of Canon Law in which all the laws of the Catholic Church were collected in one book for the first time. He was known for encouraging his followers to a deeper personal holiness and to a lifestyle consistent with Christian values. He opposed modernist interpretations of Catholic doctrine and promoted traditional devotion and theology. His motto was “restore all things in Christ” and these were the last words he spoke before he died at the age of seventy-nine. He was considered a holy person by many and was canonized in 1954. His feast day is August 21st. There is an enormous statue of St. Pius X in St. Peter’s Basilica, with both arms lifted in blessing.
