St. Philip Neri
In 1515 Philip Neri was born in Florence to a noble Italian family. He received his early education from Dominican friars and at the age of eighteen he experienced a religious conversion. He went to live in Rome and began a life of ministering to the sick, the poor and prostitutes. Later in his life he became known as the “Apostle of Rome”. He is also known for founding a society called “The Congregation of the Oratory”. St. Philip had a playful sense of humor and a keen wit. His life was permeated by his belief that “a cheerful heart is more easily made perfect than a downcast one.” St. Philip Neri is the patron saint of Rome, and of laughter, humor and joy. His feast day is May 26th. He is sometimes seen in paintings and stained glass windows in a kneeling position, with lilies and a book.
