St. Patrick
St. Patrick is one of the most well known saints, often seen on stained glass windows and depicted in sacred art. March 17th is celebrated the world over as St. Patrick’s Day. His popularity is no wonder, being as he was, humble and gentle, totally devoted to God and utterly fearless, even of death. At a young age he started praying earnestly, while in captivity in Ireland tending the sheep of his captors. At the age of twenty he escaped and returned to his homeland of Scotland, but later realised that his calling was to go back to Ireland to share the love of God with the Irish. He is the patron saint of Ireland and is often depicted in church art as an apostle, carrying a staff. Legend has it that St. Patrick banished all snakes from Ireland and this is sometimes shown in Catholic art. Another popular image associated with St. Patrick is the shamrock, a three-leafed plant which he used in teaching about the Holy Trinity.
