St. Norbert

St. Norbert of Xanten, or Norbert Gennep, was born in the late eleventh century in Germany. Being the son of a count, young Norbert was given a position at court, and lived a life of nobility. One day when riding through a forest there was a huge thunderstorm in which Norbert was thrown from his horse and lay unconscious for about an hour. When he recovered, his faith had deepened and he renounced his position at court to pursue a life of penance and devotion. He later founded an abbey and was ordained as a priest. He became a bishop of the Catholic Church and founded the Premonstratensian Order of Canons. His symbols are the monstrance (vessels used for the Eucharist) and a cross with two beams. In stained glass art St. Norbert is usually pictured as a bishop with these symbols. His feast day is celebrated on June 6th and he is the patron saint of Magdeburg and is invoked during childbirth for a safe delivery.
