St Matthias
Matthias was the twelfth Apostle, chosen to replace Judas Iscariot who betrayed Jesus and then committed suicide. The remaining eleven disciples identified two eligible candidates (Matthias and Joseph) and then they prayed and asked God to show His choice by casting lots. The lot fell to Matthias who was then added to the eleven. Matthias was one of the seventy disciples of Jesus and had been with him from his baptism by St. John the Baptist, until his ascension. Matthias was with the other disciples at Pentecost. It is not known what happened to St. Matthias in his later life but one tradition holds that he was stoned and then beheaded by the Jews in Jerusalem. His feast day is May 14th and he is the patron saint of alcoholics, carpenters and tailors. His attribute is an axe and he is usually depicted in stained glass windows either with an axe, a book or a scroll. There are at least 18 Catholic churches in the USA named after St. Matthias.
