St. Charles Borromeo
The Italian Charles Borromeo was the cardinal archbishop of Milan from 1546 until his death at the age of forty-six in 1584. He was among the great reformers of the sixteenth century and was a leading figure during the counter-reformation. He was responsible for significant accomplishments in the Catholic Church, such as the founding of seminaries for the education of priests. He is the patron saint of learning and the arts and his feast day is celebrated on November 4th. The emblem of St. Charles Borromeo is the Latin word ‘humilitas’ meaning humility, and he is usually represented in art wearing his red cardinal robes, walking barefoot, carrying the cross, with a rope around his neck. Stained glass windows sometimes show him with one hand raised in blessing, referring to his work during the plague. There are almost seventy churches in the USA bearing the name of St. Charles Borromeo, placing him among the top 60 most popular saint’s names.
