St. Cecilia
St. Cecilia is the patroness of music and musicians, due to the story that she heard heavenly music and sang in her heart to the Lord while she was married. Catholic art and stained glass designs frequently show her playing a viola, a small organ or other musical instrument. She is one of the most famous of Roman martyrs, and the story goes that together with her husband Valerian, and his brother Tiburtius, she was martyred in about 230 AD. According to legend regarding Cecilia’s death, she was struck three times on the neck with a sword, but continued to live for three days, during which time she asked the Pope to convert her home into a church. Her feast day is remembered on November 22nd, and she is one of seven women (excluding the Blessed Virgin) who is commemorated by name in the Canon of the Mass. St. Cecilia symbolises the conviction that good music is an integral part of liturgy. We can help you enhance your church sanctuary with a stained glass artwork of this musical saint.
