St. Catherine de Ricci

Born in 1522 in Italy, St. Catherine de Ricci was initially named Alessandra. When she joined the community of religious sisters of the Third Order of St. Dominic, she was given the name Catherine, after St. Catherine of Siena. From a very early age Catherine de Ricci was passionate about prayer and lived a strict life of devotion and penance. By the age of thirty she had become prioress of the convent, and was admired for her administrative skills. She was sought after as an advisor to men in positions of authority such as princes, bishops and cardinals. She engaged in extreme fasting and intercession for souls in purgatory, and was known for her spiritual ecstasies and stigmata. She died at the age of sixty-seven after a prolonged illness. Her feast day is celebrated on February 13th and she is the patroness of the sick. In stained glass windows St. Catherine de Ricci can be seen with a book and quill pen, or with her hands displaying the stigmata.
