St. Brigid of Ireland

St. Brigid of Ireland, also known as St. Brigid of Kildare, is the patron saint of Ireland together with St. Patrick and St. Columba. She is sometimes known as “Mary of the Gael” and her feast day is February 1st. Renowned for her holiness, Brigid performed many miracles including healing and feeding the poor, and she is celebrated for her generosity to the poor. Stained glass windows of St. Brigid abound, often showing her holding a reed cross and a lamp, referred to as a “lamp of learning and wisdom”. She was the first abbess of Ireland and founded a monastery at Kildare which became famous for illuminated art. Besides being patroness of Ireland, St. Brigid is also appealed to for babies, blacksmiths, children with abusive fathers, and midwives. Her color is white and the sports teams of Kildare dress in white to honor her. Sacred artworks and stained glass sometimes show her flower which is the Windflower or “Brigid Anemone”.
