St. Bridget of Sweden
St. Bridget of Sweden is one of the six patron saints of Europe. She founded the Bridgettines nuns and monks after the death of her husband to whom she was married for twenty years. Stained Glass images of St. Bridget often show her wearing a pilgrim’s hat, carrying a staff and bag, or with a crown or writing book. She was the daughter of a knight and married at the age of 14. She bore eight children, six of whom survived infancy, and one of her daughters is now known as St. Catherine of Sweden. St. Bridget became well known for her charitable work, especially towards unwed mothers and their children. She and her husband Ulf went on a pilgrimage and shortly after their return he died, leaving his young widow aged thirty-four. St. Bridget then devoted herself wholly to a life of prayer and caring for the poor and sick. Her feast day is commemorated on July 23rd, and she is the patron saint of Europe, Sweden, and widows.
