St. Barnabas

Barnabas was a Jew born in Cyprus and was originally named Joseph. He became one of the early Christians and was renamed by the disciples who called him Barnabas, meaning Son of Encouragement. He was instrumental in persuading the Christian community to accept St. Paul, their former persecutor, after his conversion. Barnabas and Paul made several missionary journeys together and Barnabas participated in the Council of Jerusalem around the year 50 AD. According to Christian tradition Barnabas was martyred at Salamis in Cyprus in 61 AD. His feast day is June 11th. St. Barnabas is the patron saint of Cyprus, Antioch, and is invoked for protection against hailstorms and as a peacemaker. Stained glass windows depicting St. Barnabas often show him with a pilgrim’s staff or an olive branch, holding the Gospel of St. Matthew. There are almost twenty churches in the USA named after St. Barnabas.
