St. Augustine of Canterbury
St. Augustine was an Italian-born during the sixth century AD. He was a Benedictine monk and the prior of a monastery in Rome. In 595 AD, Pope Gregory the Great chose Augustine to lead a mission to Britain to evangelize King Ethelberht and his Kingdom of Kent. This mission was called the Gregorian Mission. When they arrived in Canterbury, the king allowed them freedom to preach, and he was converted to Christianity. He gave them some land to build a monastery outside the city of Canterbury. Augustine became the Archbishop of Canterbury in the year 597 AD. He is known as the Apostle to the English and the founder of the English Church. Before his death in 605 AD, St. Augustine appointed his successor, Laurence of Canterbury. The feast day of St. Augustine is May 27th. In Church art such as stained glass windows, he is portrayed as a bishop, holding a model of a church or cathedral.
