Saint Albert the Great and Saint Gertrude

November 15 and 16 are feast days that honor Saints Albert the Great and Gertrude respectively, both German saints beloved by Catholics. Saint Albert the Great lived in the 1200s and is regarded by many as the greatest German philosopher and theologian of the Middle Ages. A Dominican friar who became a Bishop, Albert was educated in Padua and was a teacher in Germany and at the University of Paris. One of the earliest scientists, he was an expert in all the sciences as well as all areas of spiritual studies and theology. One of his students was Saint Thomas Aquinas. Saint Albert the Great is the patron of scientists, and his relics are contained in the crypt of St. Andrew’s Church in Cologne, Germany.

Saint Gertrude, some of whose writings still exist, is also known as Saint Gertrude the Great, and is honored on November 16, the date of her death in 1302. She is beloved by many, and her feast day is observed around the globe. She is invoked especially by those who pray for souls in purgatory and legend has it she was given this prayer by Christ Himself, – Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen.
