Stained Glass Windows featuring Saint Lucy
Stained Glass Art Lends Beauty to Feast of St. Lucy
A special December feast day in the Catholic Church, celebrated across the world and especially in Italy, is commemorated in lovely stained glass art, created by master artisans, honoring Saint Lucy, or Santa Lucia as she is known by Italians.
An early Christian martyr, Saint Lucy’s story is tragic and inspiring. Born to a noble pagan family, she was destined for a life of ease and power if she had embraced the traditions of her people, married one of her pagan suitors and rejected the teachings of Jesus. Only 300 years after the death of Christ, many still held to their pagan beliefs, and her rejection of her family’s lifestyle would bring her martyrdom. However, Saint Lucy chose to embrace Christianity, choosing to remain a virgin and rejecting the ways of her family. She dedicated her life to Christ and, after much persecution, including the gouging of her eyes, she was murdered in 304 AD.
Because of the loss of her eyes, Saint Lucy is patroness of the blind, of martyrs and of Syracuse, in Sicily, where she met her death as a martyr. Honored on December 13, she is beloved by Sicilians, who often prepare a traditional dish from raw wheat as part of her feast. Art across the world honors Saint Lucy, and the artwork from the studios of Stained Glass, Inc. celebrates this holy martyr with vibrant color and light.
