She dedicated her life to Christ and, after much persecution, including the gouging of her eyes, she was murdered in 304 AD.

Because of the loss of her eyes, Saint Lucy is patroness of the blind, of martyrs and of Syracuse, in Sicily, where she met her death as a martyr. Honored on December 13, she is beloved by Sicilians, who often prepare a traditional dish from raw wheat as part of her feast.
