Blessed Miguel Pro
Bl. Miguel Pro was born José Ramón Miguel Agustín Pro Juárez, and was also known by the nickname ‘Cocol’. He was born in Mexico in 1891, and was a mischievous and adventurous child. At the age of twenty he joined the Jesuits. Three years later terrible persecution broke out in Mexico, forcing Miguel to flee to the USA, Spain and Belgium where he continued his studies. In 1926 he returned to Mexico where Christians were still being persecuted so Miguel used his code name Cocol and would find many and varied ways of reaching those who needed him to administer the sacraments and other aspects of his priestly duties. In 1927 Bl. Miguel Pro was falsely accused of the attempted assassination of the president of Mexico. He was arrested and sentenced to death without trial. He was executed by a firing squad at the age of thirty-six. He was known for his religious piety and innocence and was beatified in 1988 as a Catholic martyr. The feast day of Bl. Miguel Pro is November 23rd. In sacred art Bl. Miguel is often portrayed at his execution in a cruciform posture with arms outstretched. If you would like to honor Bl.
