St. Sebastian, patron saint of archers, soldiers and athletes, is a popular choice for Catholic churches, with 45 in the USA being named after him. Stained glass windows portray St. Sebastian as a brave and energetic defender of the faith. He lived in Rome around 260 AD, making many converts and healing the sick. When the emperor Maximian found out that Sebastian was a Christian, he ordered his execution. Sebastian was shot with arrows and left for dead. However he survived, and then went to denounce the emperor for his cruelty. This resulted in St. Sebastian being beaten to death. He was later venerated and buried on the Appian Way. His feast day is January 20th, and he is the one appealed to for protection against plagues, due to his reported cures of various afflictions.
