St. Raphael
St. Raphael is one of the Archangels of God. He is mentioned by name in the Book of Tobit which is considered canonical by Catholics. In Catholic art, stained glass windows sometimes show Raphael standing on top of a large fish, or holding a fish at the end of a line. This refers to the Book of Tobit in which Raphael used the gallbladder of a fish to heal Tobias’ eyes. St. Raphael is also associated with the angel who stirred the waters at the healing pool of Bethesda, as recorded in the Gospel of John. The name Raphael means “God Heals”. He is the patron of the blind, of happy meetings, of physicians and travellers. His feast day is September 29th. There are 43 Catholic churches in the USA named after St. Raphael, making him the 85th most popular saint. Stained Glass artworks of St. Raphael would enhance any church building or home.
