St. Philomena
The existence of St. Philomena was first discovered in 1802 when her remains were found in a catacomb belonging to St. Priscilla in Rome. It is believed that she was a young Roman virgin martyr who died at the age of about thirteen. The stones which covered her remains had drawings on them which have become her symbols, namely anchors, arrows, a lily and a palm leaf. Stained glass windows of St. Philomena often show her wearing a crown of flowers and dressed in orange or white robes. Devotion to St. Philomena spread all over the world within a short time, even exceeding the devotion towards other martyrs venerated in the past. There are at least ten Catholic churches named after her in the USA. Her feast day is August 11th, and she is the patron saint of babies, children and youth.
