St. Peter, First Pope

St. Peter holds the tenth place in popularity with 527 Catholic churches in the USA honoring his name. Stained glass abounds with St. Peter in many varied roles and images which memorialize his blessed life. Also known as Simon Peter, he was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ, and a leader of the early Christian Church. Indeed, the Catholic Church considers him to be the First Pope. He was initially a fisherman but left his nets to follow Jesus and became one of the inner-circle of disciples who witnessed special events such as the Transfiguration. He is also remembered for walking on water with Jesus and this is sometimes shown in sacred artworks. St. Peter died in 64 AD and was crucified upside down as he did not feel worthy to die in the same manner as Jesus. St. Peter shares the same feast day as St. Paul on June 29th.
