St. Padre Pio

St. Padre Pio was originally named Francesco Forgione, born in Italy in 1887. He was clearly an extraordinary child who was drawn to the priesthood from an early age. He was named Padre Pio (meaning Pious) after being ordained into the priesthood. At about the age of 30, when praying in front of a crucifix one day, Padre Pio received the stigmata, or marks of crucifixion through the palms of his hands. These marks are often displayed in sacred works of stained glass art of St. Padre Pio. Besides the stigmata he is also known for other mystical attributes and was able to speak just the right words to each of the penitents who came to him for confessions, sometimes for ten or twelve hours per day. When he died in 1968, on September 23rd (which is now his feast day), his funeral was attended by about one hundred thousand people. He is the patron saint of civil defence volunteers and adolescents. He was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2002.
