St. Catherine of Siena

Born in northern Italy in 1347, St. Catherine of Siena was one of twins, but her twin sister did not survive. Catherine is the subject of many stained glass art designs, and holds the esteemed patronage of Italy, together with St. Francis of Assisi. She is also the patron saint of fire prevention. At the age of six, St. Catherine already started seeing visions of Jesus and the Saints and Angels. Despite not having a formal education, Catherine had a brilliant theological mind and ranks highly among the mystics and spiritual writers of the Church. Her teachings and work are recorded in nearly four hundred letters (called her “Dialogue) and prayers that she wrote. She is greatly respected for her political boldness and ability to “speak truth to power”, especially for a women of her time period. She died at the age of thirty-three, and her feast day is April 29^th. Stained glass images of St. Catherine often show her carrying roses.
