St. Catherine of Bologna

St. Catherine of Bologna was an Italian, cloistered nun, artist and saint who lived during the fifteenth century AD. At the age of eleven Catherine became the maid of honor to the daughter of the Marquis for whom her father worked. When her mistress married, she wanted to take Catherine with her, but instead Catherine chose to join a convent at the age of fourteen. She was determined to live a life of perfection and austerity, and was admired by her companions for her holiness. During her lifetime she created several artistic works as well as written works including her well known “Treatise on the Seven Spiritual Weapons Necessary for Spiritual Warfare” and also poetry and letters. Some of these works describe at length her visions of God and Satan. The feast day of St. Catherine of Bologna is March 9th and she is the patron saint of artists. Stained glass art of St. Catherine usually shows her wearing the black and white nun’s habit, with a crucifix and sometimes with an angel.
