St. Bonaventure

St. Bonaventure was an Italian, born in 1221and his original name was Giovanni di Fidanza. He is also known as the “Seraphic Doctor” and he was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1588. During his lifetime, he did many writings that are now collected together as “Pseudo- Bonaventura”. In church art such as stained glass windows, he is usually seen with books, either reading or writing. He is also pictured as a cardinal in Franciscan robes. He was very instrumental in steering the Franciscan Order, making them the most prominent order before the Jesuits were founded. In his theology St. Bonaventure brought together faith and reason that culminated in mystical union with God. He died at the age of fifty-three while assisting at the Second Council of Lyons in 1274. His feast day is July 15th. There are numerous churches, schools and universities, as well as roads, rivers and other places named after St. Bonaventure.
