St. Bartholomew
St. Bartholomew was one of Jesus’ twelve disciples, and he is mentioned by name in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. In John’s Gospel, it is believed that he is the same person as Nathanael. After the Ascension, he went to preach in India and Greater Armenia. There are three different accounts in Christian tradition as to how St. Bartholomew died, namely: that he was beaten and drowned, that he was crucified upside down, and thirdly that he was skinned alive and beheaded. Artworks and stained glass windows often represent the latter in which Bartholomew is shown with a large knife and holding his own skin. He is the patron saint of tanners, bookbinders, butchers and Armenia. His feast day is August 24th, and there are more than forty-five Catholic churches in the USA named after St. Bartholomew.
