St. Alphonsus Marie Liguori

St. Alphonsus was born in Italy in 1696. He became a Catholic bishop and was a prolific writer and theologian. He founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, which was dedicated to working among the poor. In 1762 at the age of sixty-eight he was appointed Bishop of Sant’Agata dei Goti despite his protestations. The written works of St. Alphonsus include his Moral Theology (of which he published nine editions during his lifetime) The Glories of Mary, and The Way of the Cross, as well as many more devotional, ascetic works and letters. He died at the age of ninety and his feast day is August 1st. He is the patron saint of confessors and moralists, and co-patron of Naples.
