Catholics believe that the first words spoken by baby Luigi Gonzaga at his wealthy family’s northern Italian home of Castiglione were “Jesus” and “Mary.” That baby grew to become Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, whose feast day is celebrated on June 21. Deciding early on that he wished to be a missionary and supported by his mother, a member of the Italian nobility, Luigi’s dream was thwarted by his father, a Marquis who was a dedicated military man and who demanded his son follow in his footsteps. Entering military training, Luigi excelled and served as a page in the royal court of Spain. He continued to pursue his interest in religious life and eventually, he received his first communion from Saint Charles Borromeo.

Finally, Luigi was allowed to become a Jesuit student and devoted himself to religious study while recovering from kidney disease and other maladies. At the age of 21, Aloysius received a vision in which the angel Gabriel foretold his death within a year. While still a student, Aloysius volunteered to work with sufferers of the deadly plague in a Jesuit hospital and became ill. He died just short of his twenty-second birthday in 1591. It is believed that his last word was “Jesus.”
